Belgrade Islamic heritage

More than 300 years, from 1521 to 1867, Belgrade was under the rule of Ottoman Empire. After it fell to the Ottomans in 1521, Belgrade was made the seat of the district and the second largest Ottoman town in Europe at over 100.000 inhabitants surpassed only by Istanbul. Turks called it Dar al Jihad (House of the Holy war). According to historical sources Belgrade once was a splendid Islamic city with more than 270 mosques, caravanserais, hammams, fountains and an organized water supply. Due to numerous wars Belgrade went through most of Islamic heritage vanished for good.
